ABOVE BOARD

Why is an honest person said to be “aboveboard”?  Card sharks and magicians will often put their hands out of view below a table (or board) in order to hide something or prepare their tricks. So, if someone was to keep their hands above the table (or board), he would be considered  to be honest and not trying to hide anything or trick anyone.
